San Gabriel : Renewal Plan Contested
The City Council has delayed a decision on a redevelopment plan for the city after an attorney for low-income residents of Los Angeles County criticized it as inadequate.
Lawyer Jonathan Lehrer-Graiwer wrote that the city failed to document blight over the entire redevelopment area, which includes San Gabriel Boulevard from East Elm Avenue to Central Avenue, and Las Tunas Drive from California Street to North Muscatel Avenue.
The letter also said the area is not a serious economic burden to the city because private investment alone showed signs of improving the properties within the boundaries of the plan.
John E. Rittmayer, a legal services attorney collaborating with Lehrer-Graiwer, said Wednesday that the county could lose millions of tax dollars over the life of an improperly approved redevelopment plan. The money could provide medical care and general relief to low-income residents, Rittmayer said.
The plan also fails to show how housing for low-income people would be encouraged in the city, Lehrer-Graiwer’s letter said.
