Nine people died in floods caused by heavy rains and swelling rivers in eastern Cuba, the state news agency AIN said Thursday.

The deaths occurred in three badly hit districts of Holguin province, about 560 miles east of Havana, AIN said.

Nearly 45,000 people had been evacuated from their homes because of the flooding.

Rain fell for more than 30 hours continuously in the Holguin districts of Sagua de Tanamo, Frank Pais and Moa. Large areas of the districts were under water after rivers overflowed.
