From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Gov. Lawton Chiles has signed into law gun legislation that was proposed after several Florida teen-agers were charged with high-profile crimes, including the murder of a tourist. Starting Jan. 1, youths under age 18 cannot have guns unless they are hunting or target shooting. The law sets up penalties for juveniles, parents and dealers ranging from community service to detention and jail time. It also allows police to seize guns from minors whether or not a crime is being committed. Parents who let minors have guns can face five years in jail. Dealers who sell to underage customers could spend up to 15 years in prison.
