ORANGE : Group Tries to Offset Subscription Cuts

Share

The Christian Science Monitor, Golf Digest and Esquire may soon be leaving Orange library shelves--and not because they aren’t popular.

It’s because there’s no money to buy them. Because of recent budgetary cutbacks, the city’s library system has been forced to cancel these and scores of other magazine and newspaper subscriptions.

Patrons won’t notice the absence of the periodicals until January, said Eugenia Wong, a library manager at Orange’s main branch.

“We anticipate that we will start receiving complaints like, ‘Where is my favorite magazine?’ very soon,” said Wong. “They are going to be surprised and disappointed when they find out.”

But Friends of Orange Public Library are trying to enlist community support in order to restock the city’s library shelves. More than 200 subscriptions were canceled, and as a result, the 350-member group is asking residents to donate subscriptions to the library system.

“People really depend on the library more than ever in times of economic crisis,” said Sherry Cooper, president of Friends of Orange Public Library. “People really can’t afford to buy all these magazines themselves. They really count on their library.”
