‘Peggy Judy Show’ Ready for Vegas

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

At the Hudson BackStage, Miss Peggy Judy is a performance artist who’s lost her way. Or at least that’s how this reviewer sees Molly Brandenburg’s camp imitation of a 1960s pop star trying to mount a pathetic comeback via cable access television “in beautiful Laughlin, Nev.”

Miss Peggy Judy’s ex-husband makes a surprise appearance (an appropriately swarmy Daniel Lishner), a series of ludicrous dances backdrop her tacky numbers (“Cherokee Nation,” “Light My Fire”), and there are commercial breaks for the sponsor (“Krapft Cheese Whus--it was cheese”). It’s all performed at breakneck speed, and the singing is professional. But “The Peggy Judy Show” is dangerously close to self-parody. What we see is what we get: a tired, predictable Vegas lounge act.
