American Spiritual Liberties Union

It just goes to show that the price of liberty really is eternal vigilance. Although I was alarmed by the request of the “American Spiritual Liberties Union” (South Bay Edition, Nov. 25) to put a Nativity scene in a public park, I hoped someone else would speak up, write letters and lobby for my perspective. But I was lax and, in my opinion, the separation between church and state has been breached.

I believe that each one of us has the right to express our spiritual beliefs without interference from the government. I also believe that the government should not promote one religion over any hundreds of others by allowing religious symbolism, such as a Nativity scene, in a public place. It is naive of the Redondo Beach City Council to justify its decision by presuming that all religions would have the finances and the elaborate decorations already prepared for public display.

I pray that the Redondo Beach City Council will reconsider its decision.
