VAN NUYS : Dentist Gets 6-Year Term for Molestation

Despite an emotional plea by his victim for the maximum penalty, a Reseda dentist convicted of sexual molestation charges was sentenced to six years in state prison Friday.

Dr. Kamal Matian, 48, was found guilty in September of three felony counts of attacking a 19-year-old woman. The jury found that Matian was guilty of false imprisonment, sexual battery and rape by a foreign object. Matian was acquitted by the same jury of assaulting a patient.

During the sentencing hearing, his victim pleaded for the maximum sentence, saying her life has been ruined and that she’ll have to live with the trauma forever.

“The defendant is truly a menace to society, preying on unsuspecting female citizens,” wrote Deputy Dist. Atty. Renee F. Urman in a sentencing memo that accused of Matian of attacking a half-dozen other women.

Members of Matian’s family moaned and put their heads in their hands when the sentence was announced. Later, at least two family members collapsed in the courthouse, and extra security was used throughout the building to maintain order and separate the family from victims.

Matian’s wife asked Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Michael Harwin for leniency and blamed the charges on the greed of the victim, who has filed a $30-million lawsuit against the dentist.
