COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : No. 4 Tar Heels Pull Rank

Freshman forward Jerry Stackhouse scored 19 points and sophomore guard Dante Calabria added 17 as No. 4-ranked North Carolina beat No. 22 George Washington, 87-62, Friday night in the opening round of the Tournament of Champions at Charlotte, N.C.

North Carolina (5-1) plays Brigham Young, a 72-68 winner over South Carolina, in tonight’s championship game.

North Carolina’s 7-foot center Eric Montross scored nine points. Yinka Dare of George Washington (1-1), who is also 7-0, scored 12.

North Carolina led, 32-28, at halftime despite making only 10 of 33 shots from the field. Stackhouse and Calabria scored all eight points as the Tar Heels turned a 47-41 lead into a 55-45 advantage with 11:22 to play.

Robbie Reid of BYU made four of eight free throws in the final 40 seconds to give the Cougars the victory over South Carolina.

No. 14 Purdue 98, James Madison 74--Glenn Robinson scored 29 points and had 15 rebounds to lead the Boilermakers (4-0) in the opening round of the Boilermaker Invitational at West Lafayette, Ind.

Purdue advanced to tonight’s championship game against Western Michigan, a 67-52 winner over Indiana State.

Kent Culuko scored 25 points for James Madison (1-2).

No. 15 Minnesota 90, Middle Tennessee 76--Minnesota (4-2) made four of five three throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach at Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Middle Tennessee (1-2) could not stop Randy Carter, who scored 27 points to lead Minnesota.

No. 18 Syracuse 89, Boston University 70--The Orangemen (3-0) missed all 13 three-point attempts in the first half, but found their touch for the victory in the first round of the Carrier Classic at Syracuse, N.Y.

Syracuse will play No. 20 Vanderbilt in today’s championship game.

No. 20 Vanderbilt 61, Princeton 43--Ronnie McMahan scored six points during a 9-0 run midway through the second half to help Vanderbilt (3-0) pull away for the victory in the first round of the Carrier Classic.

No. 23 Cincinnati 88, Washington 72--Cincinnati (4-1) blew a 14-point first-half lead before Dontonio Wingfield came off the bench to start a 10-2 run that helped the Bearcats win at Cincinnati.
