COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Defeats Michigan in Tournament

UC Irvine pulled away after a close first half to defeat Michigan, 65-40, in the first round at the UCI Marriott Classic women’s basketball tournament Friday at UC Irvine.

Senior guard Karie Yoshioka led the Anteaters with 17 points, three assists and three steals. Former Brea-Olinda High player Jinelle Williams had 15 points and 10 rebounds for UCI. Michigan’s Silver Shellman, a freshman forward, had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Both teams are 1-1. UCI will play Sacramento State for the championship tonight at 8.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Southern California College 89, Fontbonne College 81--After trailing following the second half, Southern California College came back, scoring 45 points and edging by Fontbonne, of St. Louis, by eight points. Free throws were a factor in the victory, with Southern California College hitting 17 of 21 at the line, while Fontbonne was 16 of 27.

In the second round of the Redlands tournament:

Chapman 81, UC San Diego 68--Greg Reynolds scored 24 points and Brian Wood had 15 for Chapman (3-1). At the end of the first half, Chapman had a slim three-point lead, but pulled ahead by 10 points with a few minutes left in the game. Chapman had a hot hand at the free-throw line, making 13 of 19.
