TONY, TONY, TONY: While on the subject, here’s a toast to the newest alternative music hero--Tony Bennett.
That’s right, the Tony Bennett.
On the heels of his appearance with two of the Chili Peppers at the recent MTV Video Music Awards, the veteran crooner will be featured at acoustic Christmas concerts around the country presented by four alternative radio stations. The list includes KROQ’s Saturday-night affair at the Universal Amphitheatre, where he’ll share the stage with Belly, Bad Religion and the Cranberries, among others.
“The kids respect him for his musical integrity,” says Bennett’s son and manager Danny Bennett. “They know there’s nothing fabricated about what he does. It’s the real Tony Bennett.”
As a result of this new love affair, Bennett, 67, suddenly finds cuts from his new “Steppin’ Out” album added to college and alternative radio playlists, while his video for the title song was recently put into MTV’s “Buzz Bin,” which assures maximum airings.
“He’s having a great time,” says the younger Bennett. “He loves the kids and the kids love him. Who knows where this will take him?”
