NO ONE HOME: When the 1990 U. S. Census was taken, there were 39,669 vacant housing units in the San Fernando Valley. The community with the lowest percentage of vacancies was Arleta-Pacoima, with a 2.6% rate, followed by Granada Hills with 3.1%, Sylmar also with 3.1%, Chatsworth-Porter Ranch with 3.9% and Sun Valley also with 3.9%.

SAFE HAVEN: In the first half of 1993, Santa Clarita had the fourth-lowest serious crime rate of all cities in the United States with a population of 100,000 or more, according to an FBI report released Sunday. Two Ventura County cities fared even better--Simi Valley ranked second and Thousand Oaks was third.

PRESSURE CURE: Anyone who remembers the “Sea Hunt” TV show knows a decompression chamber is used to treat scuba divers with the bends. . . . But these days at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, home of the largest civilian decompression facility on the West Coast, the chamber is used far more in the treatment of conditions associated with diabetes, cancer and carbon monoxide poisoning (B1).

VITAMIN WARS: A legislative war has broken out between Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Los Angeles) and the $4-billion vitamin and supplement industry (B1). . . . Waxman says he wants to ensure that manufacturers cannot make unfounded claims about supplements’ curative powers. The industry has told its estimated 160 million customers that the regulations could deny them access to some products.

GOODBY, FLIPPER: The dolphin and sea lion shows at Six Flags Magic Mountain are closing at the end of the month after 14 years of performances (B16). . . . The park near Valencia, which has been bought by Time Warner, is replacing the aquatic programs with a stunt show based on the Warner Bros. “Police Academy” films.
