Settlement Nears in Gay FBI Agent’s Lawsuit
Lawyers representing a fired gay FBI agent said Thursday that they are close to a settlement with the Clinton Administration that would protect homosexuals in the FBI from discrimination.
A federal court trial in the lawsuit by former Agent Frank Buttino was recessed Thursday in the middle of Buttino’s testimony after lawyers for both sides told U.S. District Judge Saundra Brown Armstrong that they were making progress toward a settlement.
They said they hoped to reach an agreement by Friday.
Afterward, Buttino’s lawyers told reporters that last week’s statement by Atty. Gen. Janet Reno forbidding the FBI and other Justice Department agencies from discriminating based on sexual orientation made a settlement more likely.
