Nynex May Cut up to 22,000 Jobs by 1996: Nynex, the Baby Bell for New York and New England, said it gave its unions several scenarios for restructuring the company, including one in which up to 22,000 jobs, or a bit more than a quarter of the company’s work force, would be eliminated by 1996. A spokesman confirmed that some layoffs are likely over the next three years, even though Nynex continues to earn substantial profit. But he said the scenario involving the 22,000 cuts through attrition, early retirements and layoffs would occur only if laws restricting local phone companies’ access to cable TV and other businesses do not change.
