Flanked by some of the biggest voices in the music industry, President Clinton on Sunday called on America to cherish its children and give them “the true spirit of Christmas--hope, love and peace for their childhoods.”

At a taping of NBC-TV’s “Christmas in Washington,” to be broadcast Wednesday night, Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton were treated to holiday tunes from singers Patti LaBelle, Aaron Neville, Ricky Van Shelton and Mary-Chapin Carpenter and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.

Then the Clintons took to the stage to deliver the first family’s traditional season’s greeting to the nation.

“I would ask you to remember that this spirit of giving, of kindness, of hope should extend . . . to all the children of our land,” the President said.

“Peace on Earth to each and every one of them wherever they live, whatever streets they walk, whatever schools they attend, whatever families nourish them.”

Emmy winner Kirstie Alley was the show’s hostess.
