Study Finds Cellular Phones Within Safety Standards: Levels of radio waves emitted by hand-held cellular telephones fall well within safety standards, according to a study for the National Institutes of Health. The study, to be released today, was conducted by Om Gandhi, an expert on radio frequencies at the University of Utah, It was funded in part by McCaw Cellular Communications Inc. The study found that maximum absorption of radio frequencies in any one gram of tissue is four to five times lower than levels considered safe by the American National Standards Institute and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Cellular safety became an issue after a St. Petersburg, Fla., man sued a phone maker and the service provider because his wife, a frequent cellular user, died of brain cancer.
