The Look: Maybe simple is the way to go on New Year’s Eve. A slip of an evening dress--this year, try one in brown--can be had for a little or a lot.

How to Do It Big: New York designer Pamela Dennis puts out a gorgeous silk velvet evening slip accented with beads sewn in a floral design. Tiny bead strands act as straps.

But this dress’s best assets are its low, sexy back and extra-long rear hem--almost like a short train. In midnight brown, it’s made for a princess, and you may need royal ties to afford it--$1,310. The matching scarf in burnt-out velvet with beaded tassels is sold separately for $910. Both are available in Beverly Hills at I. Magnin, Neiman Marcus and Fred Hayman.

For as little as $25, you can add an expensive-looking wrap of your own making. Polyester velvets with burnt-out designs go for $16.95 to $27.95 a yard at International Silks and Woolens in Los Angeles. Just stitch up a square scarf and add beads for effect.
