TECHNOLOGY : Hughes Launches Direct-Broadcast Satellite

The satellite, the first of two Hughes plans for its DirecTv system, went into orbit after being launched aboard an Arianespace rocket from French Guiana. DirecTv, which begins service in April, expects to eventually provide customers with 150 channels of movies, sports and other programs. Subscribers to DirecTv will have to buy a $700 receiving dish and pay a monthly service fee. Los Angeles-based Hughes is a unit of General Motors Corp.
