In a town of big gamblers, it was Utah State’s high-rolling offense that came up a winner in the second Las Vegas Bowl.

With Anthony Calvillo throwing for three touchdowns and Profall Grier running for two, the Aggies kicked off the major college bowl season Friday night by beating Ball State, 42-33.

Calvillo threw for 286 yards and Grier ran for 142 as Utah State’s run-and-shoot offense overcame some defensive lapses to give the Aggies the first bowl win in school history.

Ball State, shut out in the first half, scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to get within nine points, but got no closer.

It was the sixth straight victory for Utah State (7-5), the Big West Conference champion, which lost five of its first six games. Ball State (8-3-1) had a four-game winning streak end.

Ball State’s Mike Neu, who had only 19 yards passing in the first half, finished with 239 yards passing and two touchdowns.
