IBM Subsidiary to Leave Burbank, Shed Workers

Share

IBM said that its Altium subsidiary would relocate from Burbank to North Carolina in January, resulting in the loss of about 100 local jobs.

Altium is a supplier of desktop computer-aided design automation software for manufacturers. IBM said the relocation was part of a consolidation of several operations to Charlotte, where land costs are lower and the subsidiary can expand more cheaply.

The Armonk, N.Y.-based computer giant canceled its previous plan to move Altium to another building in Burbank to accommodate the unit’s growing space needs. A company spokeswoman said a settlement had been reached with the developer of that building.

Altium’s current lease expires at the end of January.

Of Altium’s 175 employees, about 30 will stay in the Los Angeles area at a site to be determined, the spokeswoman said. Another 30 to 50 workers will be relocated to North Carolina. The remaining workers will be laid off.
