Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Gulf War Veteran Care Bill Signed

President Clinton signed legislation requiring the Veterans Affairs Department to treat Gulf War veterans for diseases that may have resulted from exposure to toxic substances. Possible chemical and biological contamination during the war has become an issue because of the thousands of veterans suffering from debilitating and undiagnosed illnesses. Oil fire fumes, pesticides and other hazards have been raised as possible causes. The Pentagon has emphasized that no chemical agents were detected during the war.
