Delta Air Lines on Wednesday offered travelers a holiday gift--round-trip fares as low as $79 for travel on Christmas Day.

Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines cut round-trip fares between Southern California airports and Seattle and Portland to $149 for travel between Jan. 5 and April 15. The non-refundable tickets--which can be used for travel from Los Angeles, Burbank, Ontario, Long Beach, Orange County and San Diego airports--must be purchased by Dec. 31.

Delta’s holiday promotion requires passengers to begin and end their round trips on Dec. 25. The round-trip fare is based on distance: $79 for up to 500 miles; $99 for 501 to 1,000 miles, and $129 for more than 1,000 miles.

“We’re putting the seats we have left for Christmas Day on sale at very attractive fares,” said Robert W. Coggin, Delta’s senior vice president of marketing. “Passengers who may have thought they couldn’t afford to travel for the holiday now will be taking a second look.” The Christmas Day fares, which are unavailable on flights to some destinations, require no advance purchase and are non-refundable.
