Supervisor Riley to Leave Hospital Today
Supervisor Thomas F. Riley, suffering from a painful foot infection, was expected to be released today from Hoag Hospital.
“I feel pretty doggone lucky,” the South County supervisor said Thursday in a telephone interview from his hospital room.
Riley, 81, was admitted to Hoag last weekend after complaining about prolonged pain in his left foot. The ailment was diagnosed as cellulitis, an inflammation of the foot’s soft tissue.
Dr. Bruce Moricca said earlier this week that it was necessary for Riley to remain in the hospital because the infection could have spread to the bloodstream.
During his five-day hospital stay, Riley was treated with antibiotics and whirlpool baths.
Riley said he was looking forward to spending Christmas at home with his wife, Emma Jane. Riley has held his Board of Supervisors post since 1974 and has announced that he will retire next year, at the end of his current term.
