School District Finding Part-Time Jobs for Students

Share

The Los Angeles Unified School District is working with local businesses to find part-time jobs for about 2,500 students.

The First Break program has arranged summer jobs for 20 years, but this year it began offering job placement and training year-round.

In the program, students 16 to 20 years old run cash registers, stock shelves, do filing and greet customers at businesses and government agencies.

“They send over a good group of kids,” said Doreen Stearns, who supervises students at the legal department of the State Compensation Fund. “They know what to do and they do it.”

Kaiser Permanente has donated $308,000 to the program. The National Alliance of Business, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and Rebuild L.A. provide volunteer support.
