IOWA (5-2) at UC IRVINE (2-4)

Time--7:30. TV--None. Radio--KUCI-FM (88.9).

Irvine suffered two losses--to Georgetown and St. Mary’s--on a pre-Christmas trip, but things don’t figure to get any easier tonight at home against Iowa. The Hawkeyes rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit last Wednesday and fell short of upsetting third-ranked Duke, 79-76. Iowa has five players scoring in double figures and five averaging five or more rebounds. Forward James Winters leads in both categories, averaging 20.4 points and 8.4 rebounds, and he is shooting 51%. The Hawkeyes do most of their damage inside. The starting front line has combined to average 47 points and 20 rebounds. Irvine’s up-tempo style has boosted its scoring average to 82.5 points, but opponents are averaging 89. Irvine has been outscored by 39 points at the free-throw line and the Hawkeyes recently set a school record by making 61 free throws against Long Beach State.
