‘Time for Younger People,’ Retiring Lawmaker Says

WASHINGTON — After 17 years in Congress, Rep. Doug Applegate (D-Ohio) said Monday that he is ready to retire and he recommended that other old-timers do the same. Applegate, 65, issued a press release from his Steubenville, Ohio, office saying: “It is time for younger people to take the reins of government and lead us into the next century.”
