LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Curbside Recycling Will Start by April

Share

Residents of single-family homes in unincorporated areas between Topanga Canyon and the Los Angeles County line will receive curbside recycling service by April 4, a county official said Tuesday.

Four disposal companies that serve the area will be required to pick up aluminum and tin cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and milk jugs, and newspapers for recycling, on the same day other trash is collected, said Kathi Delegal, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Waste Management Division.

“We’re trying to do as much as we can to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills, not only because landfill space in the county is filling up, but also because of increasing state requirements for counties and cities,” Delegal said.

Los Angeles County has expanded curbside recycling to homes one area at a time because of the large amount of paperwork involved with notifying residents, Delegal said.

Residents of one-family homes in the unincorporated area bounded by Malibu to the south, Calabasas to the north, Topanga Canyon to the east and the county line to the west will be notified soon that curbside recycling will begin no later than April 4, Delegal said.

Curbside recycling may be offered at apartments, condominiums and businesses after the program expands to all one-family homes in the county, she said.

Disposal companies already offer curbside recycling to some of their customers, said Charlie Caspery, manager of Las Virgenes Disposal, one of four trash haulers in the area between Topanga Canyon and the county line. Several thousand residents within those boundaries do not have curbside recycling, he said. Most cities in that area require disposal companies to provide curbside recycling.

The four disposal companies are: Las Virgenes Disposal, Hillside Rubbish Inc., John’s Rubbish Co. and G.I. Industries.

Residents with questions about curbside recycling may call the county at (800) 552-5218.
