LOS ANGELES : Man Gets 20 Years for Racially Motivated Shooting

Share

A black man who told police he shot a white man in hopes of starting a race war was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in state prison.

Superior Court Judge Mary Ann Murphy imposed the sentence on Darryl Arnold, 31, who earlier pleaded no contest to attempted murder and a civil rights charge stemming from a March 17 shooting.

Prosecutors said Arnold bought a gun, waited the required 15 days for a background check and--once he got the weapon--left his house with the intention of shooting the first white man he saw. Robert Nimmons, an accountant, was shot once in the back while walking down San Vicente Boulevard in West Los Angeles.

A passerby rushed Nimmons to nearby Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where doctors saved his life.
