Frey Agrees to Contract With Giants

Share

Steve Frey, a left-handed relief pitcher who led the Angels with 13 saves last season, reached an agreement Wednesday with the San Francisco Giants on a two-year contract worth $1.85 million, spurning the Angels’ offer of $1.7 million.

Said Angel General Manager Whitey Herzog: “We made a good offer to him, and we hate to lose him, but we’ll be all right.”

The Angels will try to replace Frey in the bullpen by picking up a veteran free agent, possibly Bob Patterson (formerly of the Texas Rangers) or Bob MacDonald (formerly of the Detroit Tigers). The Angels also are expected to enter the season with one of their own young left-handers in the bullpen, choosing between Mark Holzemer and Hilly Hathaway.
