National Conference of Christians & Jews Nets $900,000

The National Conference of Christians & Jews netted $900,000 at its Nov. 11 gala honoring Sherry Lansing. The Beverly Hilton benefit, attended by more than 1,000 guests, was co-chaired by Robert Daly and Sid Sheinberg.

Weingart Center announced receipt of $185,000 for its “one-stop-shop” approach of providing single-room housing with comprehensive services to enable homeless people to regain their self-esteem and independence. The money was raised by the Weingart Center Partners, a group of area professionals, who sponsored a benefit in October at Universal Studios.

American Cancer Society raised $27,867 at its Minnie Riperton Run and Family Walk at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Nov. 7. The event was sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, Pepsi, Rockwell International and the Renaissance Runners of Los Angeles. The money will provide low-cost mammography, transportation for cancer patients to and from treatment and other programs.

Spastic Children’s League held its annual Candy Cane Ball Nov. 30 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire to benefit United Cerebral Palsy/Spastic Children’s Foundation. The gala, chaired by Mary Hester, netted $70,000.

American Film Institute announced receipt of a $5,000 donation from the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce. The gift is earmarked for AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women.

Julia Ann Singer Center received $170,000 Dec. 14, proceeds raised at a Sept. 23 luncheon hosted by The Friends of Julia Ann Singer Center. The West Los Angeles facility provides treatment for abused, emotionally disturbed and learning-disabled children and their families. The event was co-chaired by Anita Hecht and Deedy Oberman.

UCLA UniCamp will receive $90,000, net proceeds raised Dec. 13 at the annual Jamaal Wilkes/UCLA UniCamp Invitational Golf Tournament at the Wilshire Country Club. UniCamp is a student-run summer camp for underprivileged children. The tournament was co-chaired by Jamaal Wilkes, John G. Morris and Kenneth B. Roath.

San Fernando Valley Child Guidance Clinic announced receipt of a $10,000 grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation. The gift is to enable the clinic to accommodate more child abuse cases. The clinic provides mental health services to troubled children and their families.
