BREA : Council Overrules Planners on Carwash

Share

A carwash and gas station will open here now that the City Council has overturned a Planning Commission decision against the business.

Council members this week voted 3 to 2 to reverse the commission’s action taken last September, when commissioners said the project was not an appropriate land use for the southeast corner of Lambert Road and the Orange Freeway.

Citing the same reason, Mayor Glenn G. Parker and Councilman Burnie Dunlap cast the dissenting votes against the appeal at Tuesday’s council meeting.

In order to allow the project on the empty lot, the council had to change the city’s Land Use Zoning Code for the area from “office/financial” to “general commercial.”

Until Tuesday, only office buildings could be built on the site.

“I’m not opposed to the carwash, but I think this is an unfortunate site for it,” Parker said.

The council members who voted for the project said it would add value to the area. Currently, there are no carwashes in the city.

“I see the carwash being a service that the residents in the area can use,” said Councilwoman Bev Perry.

Owners said the war wash will be open within six months.
