Japanese Emperor to Visit U.S. in June
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have scheduled a royal visit to the United States this June, according to reports here, with a stop in Washington and a visit to Pearl Harbor, the site of the 1941 air raid that put the United States and Japan at war.
The trip will be the first imperial visit to the United States since Akihito’s father, Hirohito, went to the East Coast in 1975. Hirohito died in 1989.
Akihito is responding to the invitation of former President George Bush, who suggested the trip in 1992 when he was visiting Tokyo while still in office.
Palace authorities have declined to comment on media reports of the trip. But the news stories say Akihito, 60, and Michiko, 59, will spend about two weeks in the United States in mid-June. They are expected to visit New York, Washington, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu.
