Richard Berczeller; Doctor Wrote Autobiographical Stories

Richard Berczeller, 91, a physician who wrote short stories detailing his activity as a member of the outlawed Austrian Socialist movement in the 1930s. In 1938, Berczeller was arrested by the Nazis after the annexation of Austria, but was released on the condition that he leave German-held territory. He found his way to New York in 1941. He had studied medicine in Austria, and worked as a doctor for poor immigrants in New York, where he was on the staff of Beth Israel Hospital for 45 years. When he was in his 60s, he started writing his autobiographical recollections. Ten of his accounts were published in the New Yorker and collectively titled “A Trip Into the Blue and Other Stories.” In New York City on Jan. 3.
