Rabbi Malcolm H. Stern, 78, historian, author and the foremost genealogist of Jewish families in the United States. In 1960, Stern wrote “American Families of Jewish Descent,” the first genealogical survey of more than 25,000 Jewish families who settled in the United States between 1654 and 1840. His research served as a valuable source for Stephen Birmingham’s best-selling novel “The Grandees.” Stern was an adjunct professor of American Jewish history at New York’s Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
