Police Have Tape of Skater’s Attacker

A videotape that caught a brief glimpse of a man who assaulted skater Nancy Kerrigan could help police identify a suspect in the attack that knocked her from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Police said Sunday that the face of attacker can be seen in the videotape, which will be taken to a private laboratory for digital enhancement.

Kerrigan was chosen for the Olympic team Saturday, two days after the attack.

Tennis

Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the lowest-ranked entry in the Australian men’s hardcourt championships, beat fourth-seeded Alexander Volkov, 6-4, 6-3, at Adelaide in the first all-Russian final on the ATP tour.

Sweden’s Stefan Edberg won his first tennis title in nine months, beating Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-2, in the Qatar Open at Doha.

Top-seeded Chad Clark of Texas scored a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Stanford’s Michael Flanagan in the final of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Rancho Mirage. Top-seeded Lauxmi Poruri beat UCLA’s Keri Phebus, 6-2, 6-0, for her third women’s title.

Winter Sports

Christian Jagge, the 1992 Olympic champion, led a 1-2 Norwegian finish in a World Cup slalom at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Italy’s Alberto Tomba straddled a gate during his second run and was disqualified.

At Altenmarkt, Austria, Vreni Schneider completed a Swiss conquest of the Austrian Alps by scoring her 47th World Cup victory in the season’s fifth slalom. It was her third slalom victory of the season.

Heidi Zurbriggen of Switzerland was awarded her first World Cup victory when officials upheld Saturday’s results of a super giant slalom although the race had to be abandoned after 32 starters because of dangerous conditions.

At Schonach, Germany, Japan’s Kenji Ogiwara won his fourth consecutive World Cup in Nordic combined.

Second baseman Delino DeShields received a $1,162,500 raise in the contract he agreed to with the Dodgers on Saturday, going from $1,537,500 with the Montreal Expos last season to $2.7 million.
