CALABASAS : Math Tutor Program May Be Extended

A high school math tutoring program sponsored by the city of Calabasas may be extended beyond its four-week trial period due to its popularity.

The program, begun Jan. 3 for students who want help in math before midterm exams at the end of the month, most likely will be offered several times each semester, said Greg Johnson, director of the Calabasas Community Services Department.

“The parents have been very enthusiastic about this, of course,” Johnson said. “But the kids have been really good about it too. They know when they need help, especially in math.”

About 25 students at Calabasas High School enrolled in the trial program, which costs $60 for eight, twice-weekly sessions. The classes are offered between 3 and 4 p.m., and are limited to no more than six students for each instructor, Johnson said.

Classes offered include pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry. Seminar topics may be expanded to include study skills, science and other subjects, Johnson said.

The classes are a few of more than 200 offered by the two-year-old city, Johnson said. Others courses include karate, sign language, cartooning, horseback riding, computers, music, foreign languages and roller-blading.
