Jones Seeks GOP Nomination for Secretary of State
Pledging to work for campaign finance reform, Republican Assemblyman Bill Jones of Fresno announced Tuesday that he will seek the GOP nomination for secretary of state.
Jones, a former Assembly minority leader, said if elected he will seek to establish realistic contribution limits, require contributions by check only, ban money transfers between officeholders and candidates, and require fuller public disclosure of expenditures.
“However, I will actively fight any form of public campaign financing,” Jones told a Capitol news conference, “to prevent California citizens from suffering the indignity of having their hard-earned taxes pay for the campaign consultants of political candidates.”
A rancher-businessman, Jones, who was minority floor leader in 1991-92, is the third candidate, and only Republican, to declare for the race to succeed Secretary of State March Fong Eu, a Democrat. Eu has been nominated as U.S. ambassador to Micronesia in the South Pacific.
