CLUB REVIEW : At Swingers, the Jukebox Keeps the Joint Jumpin’

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Swingers rocks.

The 10-month-old diner may lure people in with promises of veggie burgers, turbocharged Smart Drinks and weekday happy hours, but it’s the music pumping from the jukebox that makes this place one of L.A.’s delights.

Creating the perfect jukebox selection is no easy task--there’s no accounting for taste, and the palate of this town changes faster than a mood ring--but Swingers keeps it a priority.

Sandwiched between Puccini and Chet Baker, you’ll find selection from Isaac Hayes, Fugazi and the Vibrators. If you’re looking for music styles to match the faux blue-collar look of the diner--the uniformly good-looking servers are dressed in grease-monkey garb--you can choose from a generous supply of Tom Waits and Patsy Cline.

A buck will get you three selections, two will score you seven, and if you want to dominate the room for the duration of your stay, drop a five-spot and own the jukebox for the next 18 songs.

Although Swingers is open Friday and Saturday nights till 4 a.m. (2 a.m. other nights) and offers 99-cent pints of Rolling Rock from 5 to 7 p.m. on weekdays, regulars know that the place really swings at breakfast. Opening time is 7 a.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. on weekends.

One complaint about an otherwise amazing array of music: This is one of the few places in town where there’s been no Elvis sighting. Maybe next week.
