PASADENA : Construction Begins on PCC Parking Area

Pasadena City College officials broke ground Wednesday on a five-story 2,064-space parking structure for students.

The $9.5-million structure at Del Mar Boulevard and Hill Avenue is scheduled to open next January. It will increase the number of parking spaces for students to 4,700, college officials said.

Lack of parking at the 26,000-student college, which serves the west San Gabriel Valley, has been an issue for at least 20 years, college officials say.

The structure is not the college’s first attempt to work out its parking problems. In May the City Council approved a one-year pilot project that allows students to park on some surrounding streets with city permits.

College officials also hope the new structure, equipped with security lights, will address safety concerns raised by students after a woman was pulled into a car on campus and raped Sept. 23.
