GLENDALE : Chamber Drops Plan for 2nd GlenFest

After the failure of its GlenFest street festival last year, the Glendale Chamber of Commerce has dropped plans for a second one, and instead will look into working with city officials to put on a smaller event in June, officials said Wednesday.

Chamber officials said they would like to hold the event the same day that the city is planning a local promotion for the opening of the World Cup soccer finals, which will be held in Pasadena.

The chamber board, which met on Tuesday, has not decided what type of event the group will sponsor.

The decision to drop the idea of holding another GlenFest--which lost $230,000 last year--was unanimous.

“I felt that if we had to, we could put on GlenFest,” said Carvel Gay, chairman of the GlenFest committee “But we might not get enough support from the sponsors.”

City officials had also expressed doubts that Glendale would be willing to kick in funds for another GlenFest.

“For me, I still have a lot of questions about the viability of GlenFest itself, and whether or not it’s prudent for the city to help make contributions to it,” said Glendale Councilwoman Eileen Givens.

Chamber General Manager Aulden Schlatter is expected to submit a report on the progress of the June event to the 17-member chamber board on Jan. 24.
