Tim Mead, who originally was hired by Buzzie Bavasi in 1981 to work full time in the Angels’ public relations department, was promoted Wednesday to assistant general manager by Buzzie’s son, general manager Bill Bavasi.

“It’s an opportunity of a lifetime for the only team I’ve ever wanted to be with,” Mead, 35, said. “Buzzie helped give me my first opportunity, and now for his son to give me this chance at the next stage of my life is awfully special.”

The Angels also announced the hiring of Joseph Schirer, 55, who developed and cast the original pilot of the “All in the Family” TV Series, as vice president/marketing. Other appointments included: Preston Gomez, special assistant to the general manger; John Sevano, assistant vice president/media relations and broadcasting; Larry Babcock, director baseball information, and Kraig Kojian, assistant director baseball operations.

In other news, Bavasi is expected to resume negotiations today with free-agent bullpen stopper Gregg Olson. The Angels have offered a two-year deal that could pay Olson nearly $3.5 million in 1994, but Olson also has offers from the Toronto Blue Jays and Atlanta Braves. The Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles are expected to submit offers within a few days.
