Lakers’ Van Exel Among Those to Play in Rookie All-Star Game

Nick Van Exel of the Lakers was among 16 players selected Thursday to play in the NBA’s first rookie all-star game, to be held Feb. 12 at Minneapolis.

The roster also includes Chris Mills of the Cleveland Cavaliers from Fairfax High and Bryon Russell of the Utah Jazz from Long Beach State. The teams will be divided not by conference, but from a mock draft later this month between coaches Doug Collins and K.C. Jones.

The other participants: Shawn Bradley of Philadelphia, P.J. Brown of New Jersey, Sam Cassell of Houston, Calbert Cheaney of Washington, Antonio Davis of Indiana, Anfernee Hardaway of Orlando, Lindsey Hunter of Detroit, Popeye Jones and Jamal Mashburn of Dallas, Toni Kukoc of Chicago, Dino Radja of Boston, Isaiah Rider of Minnesota and Chris Webber of Golden State. Bobby Hurley of Sacramento was also chosen but will not play because of injuries suffered in a car crash last month.
