Raptor Workshop and Field Trip -- Instructor Ned Harris will present a workshop Friday night on raptor identification. The workshop precedes a bus trip Jan. 23 to the Antelope Valley to look for raptors.
The events are sponsored by the Sea & Sage chapter of the National Audubon Society.
The workshop, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will be at the Irvine Ranch Water District’s meeting room on Sand Canyon Avenue.
The workshop will cover the species of birds of prey found in Southern California and how to identify them in the field based on age, sex and color variations.
For the field trip portion, the bus will leave Orange County at 5:30 a.m.
The species most likely to be seen on the field trip are red-tailed hawks, ferruginous hawks, American kestrels, white-tailed kites, prairie falcons and northern harriers. Species that might be seen include rough-legged hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, Cooper’s hawks, golden eagles and merlins.
The fees are $10 for the lecture and $15 for the field trip.
