Three teen-age boys were arrested early Monday after rival gangs from Huntington Beach confronted each other and one of the youths opened fire with a handgun, police said.

No one was injured.

The dispute started about 11:30 p.m. Sunday as the two gangs traveled in four cars on Bristol Street in Santa Ana, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Andy Gonis said.

One gang followed the other into Costa Mesa, Gonis said. Somewhere between South Coast Plaza and Red Hill Avenue, a 16-year-old pulled a handgun and fired half a dozen shots into the two cars carrying rival gang members, he said.

The shooter and his gang fled when they saw a police car near Jamboree Road, Gonis said.

Newport Beach police, with the help of Huntington Beach police, arrested a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old at their homes in Huntington Beach several hours later, Gonis said.

About 11 a.m. Monday, Newport Beach and Costa Mesa officers arrested another 16-year-old, who they believe was the shooter, in Huntington Beach, Gonis said. Investigators found a small-caliber handgun at his residence, he said.

The three suspects, who were not identified because of their ages, were being held in Juvenile Hall on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
