WASHINGTON : Revitalized Talks

Share

Revitalized by President Clinton’s weekend meeting with Syrian President Hafez Assad, the Middle East peace talks resume next Monday in Washington with negotiations between Israel and Syria the focus of efforts.

Both Israel and Syria are expected--with strong U.S. prompting--to bring major proposals to Washington, aware that a breakthrough in their negotiations could turn 1994 into the “year of peace” for the region. Talks with Jordan and Lebanon will also resume.

The key issues between Israel and Syria remain whether Israel can trust Syria’s promises of peace, how far Israel will retreat on the Golan Heights and what guarantees of security each country will require.
