A final suspect charged with murder and assault in the killing of San Clemente teen-ager Steve Woods was ordered Tuesday to stand trial as an adult.

Saul Penuelas, who recently turned 18, is the fourth juvenile in the case to face murder and multiple assault charges in adult court. The others, including Penuelas’ younger brother, were ordered last week to stand trial as adults on the same charges.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Gary Paer said he will also charge the four with gang involvement, which would extend their sentences. Each one is being held on $250,000 bail in Orange County Jail.

Woods, 17, was among a group of friends in several vehicles who were pelted with rocks, beer cans and other items by a group of 10 to 15 people on Oct. 15 as they tried to avoid a confrontation at Calafia Beach County Park in San Clemente, according to testimony. Woods, a passenger in the first vehicle to leave the parking lot, was speared through the head with the metal rod of a paint roller. He fell into a coma and died about three weeks later.

Saul Penuelas, who told police he threw a rock during the melee, was driving the pickup that apparently contained the paint rollers, according to testimony. The defendant’s father, to whom the pickup belonged, works as a painter.

Defense lawyers have said their clients didn’t intend to kill anyone and could be rehabilitated in the juvenile system.

Two adults were also charged in the case.
