Ford Developing New Transmission: The auto maker said it has invested $680 million to develop the front-wheel drive transmission and to convert a former axle plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., to produce it. The plant will initially make about 400,000 of the AX4N electronic transmissions for the 1995 Lincoln Continental and some 1994 and ’95 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable cars.
