Two local elementary schools have been nominated by the California State Department of Education for a national award given to outstanding schools.

Kettering Elementary in Long Beach and Gardenhill Elementary in La Mirada are among six elementary schools in Los Angeles County and 40 statewide to be chosen last month as candidates for the Blue Ribbon Schools Award, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.

The two schools became eligible for the award by earning state honors as California Distinguished Schools. Schools are judged for the Blue Ribbon award on a number of criteria, including strong curriculum, test scores, parent participation and other awards the schools have won. Particular emphasis was placed on math and science programs, said Pat McCabe, a spokesman for the California Department of Education.
