COMPTON : Memorial Vigil Planned to Honor 2 Slain Officers

Share

A candlelight march and vigil has been planned to mark the anniversary of the slaying of two Compton police officers.

Organized by Police Department officials, the march is scheduled for Feb. 22 in memory of officers Kevin Michael Burrell and James Wayne MacDonald, who were shot on that date last year.

Burrell, 29, and MacDonald, 22, are the only Compton officers in the city’s history to be slain on duty. Each man was shot in the head shortly before midnight, following a routine traffic stop. A San Pedro man, Regis Thomas, was arrested in connection with the killings and remains in custody, awaiting trial for murder.

Officers plan to begin the vigil about sundown at the police station on Willowbrook Avenue, Police Chief Hourie Taylor said. Marchers will pass by the home of Burrell’s parents, then continue to the intersection of Rosecrans and Dwight avenues, where the two men were gunned down.
