Two Banks to Redress Racial Loan Rejections

WASHINGTON — A bank in Mississippi and another in South Dakota agreed Friday to settle race discrimination cases by setting aside nearly $1 million to compensate blacks and Native Americans denied loans or overcharged on the basis of race.
The agreements between the Justice Department and the First National Bank of Vicksburg, Miss., and Blackpipe State Bank in Martin, S.D., were announced by Atty. Gen. Janet Reno and submitted to federal judges for their approval.
