Backup Needed for Some CD Versions

I enjoyed reading Jennifer Pendleton’s article (Dec. 28) on Digital Theater Systems. However, I’d like to point out that a claim made in the article is somewhat misleading.
The article states that with the DTS system, studios will save money by only having to send a foreign language version CD for overseas markets. This is not entirely correct. Since the backup track for the DTS film is the traditional soundtrack printed on the film, if the foreign language CD should fail, the international audience would then hear the backup track, presumably in English. Obviously, this wouldn’t be an acceptable presentation. Therefore, studios will still be required to provide foreign-language-dubbed prints to ensure trouble-free presentations.
While this is a small point in comparison to the large achievement of DTS, I thought you might appreciate the added information.
